Methods of selection of employees

Traditionally, interviewing is how companies select employees and it has been like this since a long time. Many people believe in the methodology of taking interviews from potential employees before selecting them for a particular job. This is because interviewing someone gives you a clear idea of the person’s social skills and confidence which is a major requirement in many jobs, it also gives an idea about the personality and nature of the person and wether or not he/ she will be able to follow orders without hesitation, if there will be ego clashes or not, if the person is disciplined or not and many other things that one can make out only by speaking to a person face to face. There are many people who are great speakers and are very convincing even if they’re not that skilled , they find the current employee selection method to be in their favour. One of my friends who knows nothing much about marketing and it’s principles and how to deal with customers got a marketing internship just because he is a very confident and convincing person.

On the other hand, many people believe that there are many other ways for selecting employees other than interviewing them. The alternative ways could be by getting forms filled by people where they could write their answers without any fear or hesitation. This  is because many highly skilled, smart people have low confidence or are shy and find themselves to be at a loss of words when asked questions face to face. This is a huge disadvantage as they lose many jobs just because of one of their  personality traits even if they are very intelligent and have a lot of experience. I have found myself in many situations during vivas or interviews for internships where  no matter how well I’ve prepared myself I always end up saying something wrong  or forget things that I know very well other wise.

According to me , only in jobs where a persons social skills are very important and are the main requirement like marketing for example, the companies should conduct interviews but other than this for all other jobs where all that is required is a persons intelligence level, skill level and experience , companies should select employees by alternative selection methods like seeing their resume or  by giving them forms in which they can write their answers. This would be a great help for people like me who are shy and would prefer this method of selection of employees.
