The practice of depending up on entrance exams to give entry of students to collages has been lingering in our society for a long period. Nobody has really cared of the usefulness of these exams in deciding the potential of students. Authorities consider the exams to be the easiest way to select students to collages without giving importance to other factors involved. Any kind of discriminations faced by students is totally neglected. Is this the right practice to decide which student goes into which collage. It is high time that we spent time in considering these factors and implement alternative practices in selection of students.
The use entrance exams in selecting students to universities had occurred many years ago. But extensive use of such exams has happened in recent years. Earlier students were allotted collage based on their academic performance. The number of applicants were also less, hence the selection based on academic performances were easier. But now the applicant number has increased and sorting based on academic performance is too difficult. Here entrance exams play the major role by cutting out proportion of applicants who do not score the required marks. Selection from those remaining candidates becomes really easy for the selectors.
But can these exams really measure the knowledge of the students appearing for it. The exams occur for a particular time with particular number of questions. Usually objective type questions are given during entrance exams. Students are required to complete the question within the specified time. Usually students only get a minute spent on one question. So it totally depends on the responsiveness of those appearing rather than their knowledge. Not just that, the day of examination plays a major role. If one is going through a rough day and he finds it really difficult to concentrate during exam time, the chance of getting in to his choice of school is completely lost there. He must probably wait another year to appear for the exam once again. All the work that he put for training just goes in vain without any result. Usually students spent years preparing for these exams, and that just one day decide their future. And a lot pressure also builds upon these students at their beautiful time of life. Not just students , but parents too have to go through a lot of pressure. Its like mere mugging up can land you in a good collage.
These has lead to a bad practice in the society . Entrance exam coaching institutes have become very common nowadays. The only confusion for parents is to where they should sent their children. Parents never hesitate to pay coaching institute huge amount of money since they just want their children to end up in a good collage. The competition has also risen very high. But those students who are not rich enough faces discrimination here. They don’t find themselves in good collages since they lack the money. The practice indulging coaching institutions has even violated the purpose of entrance exams. They just train their students mere questions and answers which greatly damages the learning potentials of students. It is high time that we recognize these problems.
