The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a superhero media franchise of different types of media such as movies, television series, digital series among various others, produced and managed by Marvel Studios. They are based on the superhero comics produced by Marvel Comics. The MCU is a shared universe, i.e., all the superhero series take place in the same universe. This leads to different characters from different series crossing paths with each other, and different storylines affecting each other. Currently, the MCU has three complete phases: MCU Phase One, MCU Phase Two and MCU Phase Three. Each phase has its own set of movies. The watching order of MCU Phase Two movies are:
- Iron Man 3 (2013)
- Thor: The Dark World (2013)
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
- Ant-Man (2015)
Without further ado, here is MCU’s Phase Two’s top three movies:
Guardians of the Galaxy
If the Earth has the Avengers, outer space has the Guardians of the Galaxy. Peter Quill, an intergalactic smuggler, Gamora, an assassin by trade, bounty hunter Rocket, a genetically-engineered racoon and his partner Groot, a tree-like humanoid along with Drax, a warrior all find themselves brought together by a mysterious Orb. This unlikely rag-tag group must then team up together to prevent the tyrannical war criminal Ronan from obtaining the orb to prevent the whole galaxy from being destroyed. The movie stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Gamora as Zoe Saldanha, Rocket Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, and Lee Pace as Ronan. Each of the actors have put up a splendid performance. The movie is peppered with humor, a signature of the Guardians of the Galaxy series; even in its serious moments, however, it never feels forced or out of place. The movie is enjoyable from start to finish and has you rooting for this found family.
Released in 2015, Ant-Man is the story of a fugitive turned superhero. The story follows Scott Lang, recently released from prison, who after numerous failed jobs, breaks into the house of a scientist Hank Pym. Instead of finding any valuables, he finds a suit which is able to shrink him in size. Now scared, he attempts to flee but is arrested and then broken out by none other than Hank Pym. Scott, along with Hank and his daughter Hope van Dyne finds himself in a plot to commit the heist of the Yellowjacket, a similar suit made by Pym’s protégé Darren Cross and prevent it from being sold to the criminal group Hydra. The movie stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang / Ant-Man, Evangeline Lily as Hope van Dyne, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym and Corey Stoll as Darren Cross. The movie is fun to watch, with both hilarious as well as heartfelt moments, and Paul Rudd’s portrayal of Scott Lang is stunning.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Set two years after the events of The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier explores Steve Rogers acclimatizing to life in the modern world, when he gets entangled in a conspiracy theory involving S.H.I.E.L.D. Along with Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director, the Black Widow Natasha Romanoff and the Falcon Sam Wilson, he must unearth the secret that threatens S.H.I.E.LD. along with a mysterious assassin known as the Winter Soldier with a connection to his past. The movie stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlet Johansson as Black Widow and Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson. The movie has very good action scenes and the plot always keeps you guessing as to what comes next.
