BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER(BDD)

Body Dysmorphic disorder is a mental disorder marked by an obsessive of perceived defects or flaws in once appearance. A flaw that to others is considered minor or not observable.

People suffering from BDD

  1. Can feel emotion such as shame and disgust concerning a part or parts of their body part and fixate on this.
  2. The obsession is so intense that the person repeatedly checks and compares the perceived flaw seeks reassurance sometimes for several hours each day.
  3. The person can also adopt unusual routines to avoid social contact that exposes the perceived flaw.
  4. This pervasive thoughts about their appearance and body image interfere with their daily life via
    • Educational
    • Occupational dysfunction and
    • Isolation

No matter how many times people assure them that there is no flaw, they cannot accept that the issue doesn’t exist.

The most common features about which people obsess includes:-

  • Nose
  • Wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Complexion
  • Blemishes
  • Hair
  • Skin
  • Vein appearance
  • Muscles size
  • Tone
  • Breast size
  • Buttocks
  • Genitalia

BDD is estimated to affect up to 2.4% of the population. The condition usually starts during adolescence affecting both men and women. BDD does not go away on its own if Untreated it may get worse with time leading to

  • severe depression
  • Anxiety
  • Substance abuse
  • Suicidal thoughts and behavior

Causes

The exact cause is unknown, but like every other disorder BDD may result from a combination of causes such as:-

  1. Brain differences
  2. Environmental factors; special if they involve negative social evaluations about the body or Self-image
  3. Childhood trauma
  4. Genetics; studies suggest that BDD is likely to run in family.

Certain factors that may increase the risk of developing the condition may include:-

  1. A family history
  2. Negative body image
  3. Perfectionism
  4. Negative life experiences such as bullying or teasing
  5. Introversion
  6. Media influence.

Symptoms

Extreme preoccupation with a perceived flaw in your physical appearance that appear minor to others for at least one hour a day. Attempting to hide perceived flaw with –

  • styling, makeup or clothes – to seeking plastic or cosmetic surgery,
  • avoiding social situations,
  • constantly comparing appearance with others,
  • always seeking assurance about appearance from others,
  • low self-esteem, compulsive behaviour such as skin picking and frequent clothes changing.

Extreme preoccupation with an appearance that interferes with social life work, school, or other functionality.

Diagnosis

A medical evaluation will be carried out other medical conditions after which further evaluation is carried out by a mental health professional.

Diagnosis is based on:-

  1. A psychological evaluation; which aims at assessing risk factors and thoughts feeling as well as behavior can be associated with a negative self-image.
  2. Personal, medical, family and social health history.

Treatment

Treatment option may include therapy and medication includes:-

  1. Cognitive behavioral therapy; that helps you learn how to cope and behave to improve your mental health
  2. Medications; such as SSRIs may help is control obsession and control repetitive behaviours

Psychiatric hospital may be suggested if the symptom is severe such as when you’re in immediate danger of harming yourself.

One trend I’ve noticed is that many individuals that have really made a name for themselves as trusted voices in the social media space during the formative years of the industry simply are not blogging as much or have diversified into other areas of marketing. At the same time, a steady drumbeat of social media marketing advice can be found amongst a smaller number of highly focused industry blogs and companies serving the social media marketing industry.

Speaking of the social media marketing industry, you may have noticed some well known social media marketing technology brands are not on the above list. That’s because we’ve already included them in the martech list, but they certainly belong in this collection, so here they are:

Self care is not selfish thing

Often times, when we do something for ourselves, it is considered selfish. Growing up it is common to be taught to take care of other people and put others first. However, when it comes to our mental and emotional health, these types of actions of neglecting yourself to put others first can have huge consequences.

Self-care can be confusing and it can make you feel like you are putting too much attention on yourself. But remember, self-care never has and never will be selfish, especially when it comes to mental health.

In order to take care of other people, you must take care of yourself first. 

Why Self-Care is Important

Self-Care is one of the most important things that a person can do for themselves. It is not only vital for your physical health, but also your emotional and mental health as well.

There are many misconceptions around self-care and what exactly it entails. However, self-care is really not that complicated. At the most basic level,

self-care is just doing good things for yourself. This could be anything from working out, to taking an hour every night to journal, anything that makes you feel good.

Self-care requires you to know and understand yourself. You are forced to listen to your body and mind, understand what resources are running low and what you have to do to replenish them. 

There are many benefits that come with performing self-care. Some of them include increased productivity, improved resistance to illnesses & better physical health are just a few. These benefits are just the beginning.  Some of the other, more personal benefits are, enhanced self-esteem, increased self-knowledge, and most importantly, you have more to give to other people.

When you are mindful about reguarily carving out time for yourself and making sure that your physical, emotional, and mental needs are being met, you will feel better in all aspects of your life.

This makes it easier for you to work with and help others in their time of need. Just like when you are on an airplane, you have to take care of yourself before you can help anyone else. 

Stigma Around Self-Care

Self-care can be hard, not only because of the stigma that surrounds it, but because it can be extremely difficult to admit that you need help or to take care of yourself when you are struggling with your own mental health.

Growing up, it is extremely common to hear that you should put others before yourself. Kids are taught that being too vain or thinking about yourself is selfish. When you take time to take care of yourself, friends and family may start to get frustrated or say that you need to spend more time thinking about others and spending time with them.

However, the worst stigma, is self-stigma. The voice in your head that tells you to stop focusing on yourself, saying that you don’t deserve the time or attention that you are giving yourself.

You start to think about all of the things that you are neglecting and the people who deserve your attention more. However, this self-stigma, and any outside stigma, is far from true.

By taking care of yourself you are making sure that you will be able to help and encourage others.  

How you can Take Care of Yourself 

Self-care can be difficult because of the stigma that comes with it. However, understanding how, and being able to take care of yourself is one of the strongest things that you can do.

It is also important to distinguish between the things that actually make you feel good and things that you think make you feel good, but often have the reverse effect, like drugs & alcohol, over-eating, and taking risks. 

There are many different types of self-care; the most well-known is physical self-care. When people say that they are trying to take care of themselves this is often what they mean.

Physical self-care can be helpful not only for your physical health but also to help you let off steam. This doesn’t have to be going to the gym, it can also mean dancing around the house to your favorite song, doing yoga, or going outside and going for a walk. This could also be taking a nap when you need some extra rest or giving yourself a break when you are down or unwell.

However, while physical health is important and this type of self-care can make a huge difference, it can also be harmful to your mental health if you focus on your physical self too much and too often. Working out and getting the ‘perfect’ body isn’t what self-care is all about.

It is vital to remember the other parts of yourself that need to be taken care of, make sure that you aren’t focusing on the outer-self to avoid taking care of your inner-self. 

Sensory self-care helps to calm the mind. This will help you to live in the moment, focus better, and let go of the past and forget your anxieties.

This type of self-care is all about sight, smell, touch, and sound. This could be considered sitting outside at the beach, enjoying the feeling of the water on your skin from a shower or a bath, or listening to calming music. Anything that helps you feel calm and relaxed. 

8 Traits Of Mentally Strong People

When we see someone who is always happy we think “Wow, he/she is a mentally strong person.” Or when we come across a person who always looks consistently calm we think “Yeah, she/he can control his emotions which means they are mentally strong.”

But these are not the traits on the basis of which we can understand who is truly mentally strong. There are a number of small things that give away a person who is truly mentally strong. Let’s look at these traits now.

1. Acknowledge all emotions (including negative). This means that people who are actually mentally strong, allow themselves to feel all emotions without controlling them. This is because they somewhere in their mind know that bottling up their emotions is only going to harm them in future. If they are sad, they will look sad. If they are ecstatic, they will look ecstatic. If they are confused, they will show that they are confused.

2. Don’t live in the past. They like to live in the present and get ready for there future. Yes, they might have regrets. But they don’t dwell in their past mistakes or critical moments. In fact, they learn from their past and think, “Yes, I was like this. Yes, I did this. It was wrong.” As they say this, they also look into ways through which they can change that particular behavior that cause them the regret.

3. Not easily influenced by others. They stand by their morals in a way, that it becomes sufficient anyone to influence them. A simple example can be peer pressure. For example, a girl knows and believes that smoking and drinking is bad for health. When she enters college her friends might pressurize her into trying to smoke or drink. Now if she is mentally strong she will stand by her morals by saying ‘no’ to them. Not only will she say ‘no’, she will also try to make her friends quit.

3. Don’t let others overstep their boundaries. Mentally strong people are always aware of their boundaries. It maybe social, personal or professional. They set their own boundaries. It is a good thing for their well being. They know where the line is and make sure they don’t cross it. Neither do they allow others to cross it. Setting boundaries doesn’t make them dismissive or cold. By setting up boundaries they actually form healthier relationships. This in a way makes them more caring and supportive. As they know their boundaries, they don’t overstep them and as a result don’t feel emotionally drained.

5. Not rigid with their own perspective. We know that mentally strong people have a strong sense of self. But it doesn’t mean that they are not open to new perspective. They even re-evaluate their perspective from time to time just to make sure they are not on the wrong path. And if they think that they are, they are always ready to accept new ideas and beliefs which they feel can help them grow. They like to listen other people’s perspective as they know that this helps them grow.

6. Don’t blame others for their mistakes. When they know that they are in the wrong, they don’t shy away from accepting them. They don’t blame others for their mistakes. By doing this, they acknowledge that they were in the wrong and show their willingness to correct their mistake in any way possible. They also don’t blame themselves for self pity. They know that they are mentally strong and don’t desire anyone to be sympathetic towards them. They don’t like special treatment by indirectly asking for pity from others.

7. They are not perfectionists. They don’t stick to doing a particular thing until it’s perfect. They like a little space for improvement in whatever they are doing. They view failures in a healthy way and continuously work on themselves to correct their mistakes. They don’t want to be perfect. They want to be the ‘better version’ of themselves everyday. This, again shows that they wake up every morning with the thought of bettering themselves at something instead of becoming perfect.

8. Not scared of being in their own company. Many people don’t like to stay alone with their thoughts because they are afraid of their mind bringing up stuff from the past and ultimately leading them to overthink. Mentally strong people not only not dread their own company but they also even enjoy it. They view this time period as a way to self reflect. They have honest conversations with themselves and develop good habits. In this time, they read books that make them feel good and motivated. They pick up a hobby and stay positive. In short, they embrace themselves and are not scared of being alone.
